Prominent citizens appeal political, social groups to shun June 4 yatra programme

JAMMU, May 31: Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Pradeep Gupta convened a joint meeting of senior officials and prominent citizens of Jammu to review the Amarnath yatra arrangements and seek suggestions for further improvements.
DIG Police, Sardar J.P. Singh, District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma, Joint Director of Information, Jammu, Soujanya Sharma, Prominent citizens besides others were present in the meeting.
The District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma said that the purpose of the meeting was to seek the cooperation of the public in smooth conduct of yatra on the scheduled dates. He said the government has drafted the yatra schedule after considering all aspects with regard to safety and convenience of the yatris in mind. He said there was no possibility of early start of yatra as both tracks leading to cave shrine are still under snow, while the deployment of security forces along the route for the protection of the yatris was yet to be made.

The Prominent citizens suggested that confusion about the start of yatra should be put to an end by holding interactions with the concerned organisations and public. They suggested that the matter should be taken up with the Shrine Board for the commencement of yatra from June 17. They further suggested that the recent footage of the track and cave should be shown to the public on the national level so as to mobilize opinion of the people.
Regarding the duration of yatra, the prominent citizens suggested that this is purely a religious belief and should not be politicized. They said that the government should explore the possibility to conduct yatra as per past practice.
The prominent citizens also said that Yatri Bhawan is not sufficient to cope with the rush of yatries and the Government should make additional arrangements for the stay of the pilgrims. . They also demanded that Shrine Board should make better sanitation arrangements along the route.
DIG Police, S. J.P. Singh sought the cooperation of citizen for the smooth conduct of the yatra. He exhorted that Law and order situation should be maintained at all costs and nobody should be allowed to overcome the law and order situation.
Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Mr. Pradeep Gupta thanked the prominent citizens for attending the meeting.
He apprised the prominent citizens about the arrangements being made for the smooth conduct of the yatra. He assured that Pooja will be performed on June 4 on Jaisht Purnima. He said that the Shrine Board is continuously reviewing the situation.
