Cong leader, med officer booked for sending arms to Naxals

GADCHIROLI, June 22: Police in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra have registered a case against a local Congress leader and a medical officer of Primary Health Centre for trying to supply arms, explosives and medicines to Naxals.
While four men who were taking the consignment to Naxals in a government ambulance were arrested last night, police were looking for Congress leader and former Zilla Parishad president Bandopant Mallelwar and medical officer Dr Ravindra Karpe.
Acting on a tip-off, local police stopped an ambulance belonging to Porla Primary Health Centre near Tadgaon in Bhamragad tehsil last night, said Suvez Haque, Superintendent of Police.
Search of the vehicle yielded arms and explosives including four detonators, 1 kg of gelatin, 10 rounds of AK-47 rifle, along with medicines and tarpaulin sheets.
Ambulance driver Sandeep Chndrapas (47); Chhanulal Shende {55}, a resident of Mundipar  in Gondia district; Jiwanlal Bobte {39}, resident of Chirchad Bandh in Gondia district and Vivek Dhait {25}, who worked as driver for Mallelwar, were arrested on the spot.
They allegedly told police that Mallelwar and Karpe had asked them to take the consignment to ultras. Police have registered offences under Indian Arms Act, Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against the arrested men, Mallelwar and Karpe. (PTI)
