Srinagar, July 7: The practical depiction of the phrase ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ has been carried by a youth from Rajpora area of North Kashmir’s Handwara who has been compelled to build a water storage tank as a way to end the age-old drinking water crisis in his area.
The youth named Ishfaq Ahmad upon returning from Delhi found out that the residents of his area are still consuming impure water and that the water crisis still continues to haunt them.
Upon witnessing a situation that was in total contrast to what he was used to in Delhi, he, one day found out that freshwater was oozing out from a spring near the end of a hillock in the area.
He said that the view of pure water coming out of spring caught his eye and it was stuck in his mind. “The sight of it caught me entirely, and I began to think about it and the process finally took me somewhere,’ he said.
Ishfaq then came up with the idea of constructing a small water storage tank that could address the need for drinking water for around 200 households living in the village.
“For years, I have seen my people suffering for want of drinking water; over the years, we have been approaching the concerned authorities, putting forward our demands, but to no avail,” Ishfaq said, adding that ultimately pushing him along with a few more youngsters to come up with the idea.
He said that before the construction of the mini-tank they even shared the idea with the officials of the PHE, “but, perhaps, they were not impressed, but that did not discourage us and we went ahead with the plan and constructed a min water storage tank at a cost of over 20 thousand rupees,” he said.
Now that the tank has been constructed, the group of youngsters now needs pipes to connect the tank with the main PHE water supply tank in the area which is at a district of 1km down the hill and would ultimately help them in supplying the potable water to the residents.
The locals have appealed to the LG’s administration to take measures in this regard so that they are provided with the required pipes so that the village is supplied with fresh drinking water.
The villagers are also hopeful that the idea that has been materialized by their youth will help to end the water woes in the area.
