Padma Sachdev passes away

JAMMU, Aug 4: Renowned Dogri poetess and writer from Jammu and Kashmir Padma Sachdev passed away today at her Mumbai residence. She was 82. Lieutenant Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha and Minister of State in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh have condoled the demise of the writer.

Padma Sachdev was born in 1939 in Purmandal village of Samba district in Jammu region. She was the first modern woman poet of the Dogri language. She had published several poetry collections, including ‘Meri Kavita Mere Geet’, which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971. She was also the recipient of the Padma Shri (2001) and the Kabir Samman for poetry for the year 2007-08 presented by Government of Madhya Pradesh. Padma Sachdev had many contributions in the field of literature.
According to one of the relatives of the poetess, she had to be admitted in a hospital in Mumbai few days back after complaint of restlessness as she was suffering with several age related illnesses. She was discharged from the hospital yesterday and today at about 4:15 am, she breathed her last at her Mumbai residence.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh took to twitter to express condolences over her demise. “Shocked to hear the news of the passing away of Padma Shri, Padma Sachdev Ji, a recipient of national fame in the writings of Dogri and Hindi.” “It is difficult for Dogri literature and Duggar society to fill up this vacuum created,” Singh tweeted.
Taking to microblogging site, LG wrote, “Saddened to learn about the passing away of Padma Shri Padma Sachdev Ji, the celebrated writer, poetess and novelist from J&K. She made rich contributions to Dogri and Hindi Literature. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family members, well-wishers.”
Mourning the sad demise of Padma Sachdev, former Member Parliament Dr Karan Singh said, “In the passing of Shrimati Padma Sachdev, the nation has lost a leading literary figure and the Dogri speaking community has suffered a grievous loss. “Her contribution to Dogri literature over many decades was unparallel and her poems will be long remembered by lakhs of Dogri speakers,” Dr Karan Singh said, adding, he himself have translated several of her poems into English.
National Conference president and Member of Parliament from Srinagar Dr Farooq Abdullah has also expressed profound grief over the demise of Padma Sachdev.
In his condolence message, Dr Farooq said “The news of Padma Ji’s passing away marks an end to an era; she was a renaissance figure in the field of Dogri literature. The versatile personality of Padma Ji will be remembered for her immense contribution to Dogri literature. She wrote as she saw, as she felt without dilution and with rare sensitivity and empathy for her characters. Her story telling magic, her couplets have immortalized her. On her demise, I pay my tributes to her and pray for peace to her departed soul. I express my unison with the bereaved family members and numerous followers and admirers of her at this difficult time.”
