LEH, Aug 8: The students of Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS) Choglamsar are observing protest dharna for the last 13 days to press for their various demands, which include recognition to their certificates and appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor.
The student also didn’t allow CIBS staff to enter the campus for work. The students were forced to resort to protest dharna after a series of press conference and demonstrations by them failed to yield any concrete result to solve their grievances.
CIBS, funded by Ministry of Culture GoI, was affiliated with Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi which used to provide degrees to CIBS students of Shastri (Graduation) and Acharya equivalent to Post Graduate till 2016 and Director of the CIBS could issue certificates upto class 12th.
However CIBS had to disaffiliate from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in 2016 after getting Deemed to be University status and without knowing the consequences, CIBS disaffiliated itself from recognized Board also. In absence of having any affiliation with any recognized Board, the students of CIBS upto class 12th failed to get recognized certificates since 2016 besides number of primary school branches run by the Institute through different monasteries of Ladakh are also without any recognition.
Thus thousands of students’ fate hangs in air with lots of technical issues to get recognition. Citing health reason, the Director of the Institute Prof Konchok Wangdus resigned from his job on 28th December 2020 leaving the students in lurch.
Talking to media, CIBS Student Welfare Committee (SWC) President Padma Tashi said that their demands include recognition to their certificates, retrospect effect to their certificates from 2016 and appointment of full time Vice Chancellor (VC). He added that students from CIBS couldn’t take admission in any other Institution for their further studies besides they also couldn’t apply for jobs.
The Director School Education Department of UT Ladakh had issued a show-cause notice to the Director of CIBS on December 1, 2020, asking the latter to take necessary corrective measures within a month. CIBS was asked to get affiliation of any competent authority and recognition to run the school course.
As per the notice, the institution is not competent to conduct academic courses for 1st to 12th classes and to issue certificates after its disaffiliation from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.
