Gunbattle rages in Tral; cop killed, 3 militants holed up

Srinagar : “A police man was killed and three others were injured in a gun battle with militants in a South Kashmir village this morning”, the Deputy Inspector General of Police South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar told Excelsior.

“Three militants are trapped inside a house after police and army cordoned off village Madoora in Tral area of South Kashmir. The holed up militants opened fire on a search party leading to death of a police man and injuries to 2 others”, the DIG said.
The gunbattle raged a day after 2 civilians were killed in a North Kashmir village yesterday. Army and police have launched separate investigations into the circumstances under which the two civilians were killed.
Restrictions have been imposed in North Kashmir’s Bandipore area on the movement of people and vehicles where the two civilians were killed.
The seperatist leaders like Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik have been put under house arrest to avoid flare of in street violence.
A Superintendent of Police was among around a dozen police men and protesters injured in the violence that followed the killing of two civilians.
And shops, business establishments, schools, colleges are closed in response to a separatist sponsored strike call in Kashmir against the killing of two civilians yesterday.
