Date Palm orchard to serve as game changer for farmers’ economy: Advisor Khan

SAMBA, Aug 14: Advisor to Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Khan today said that establishing a first Date Palm orchard in the Jammu Division will serve as a game changer for the economy of the farmers of the Jammu Division.
The Advisor said this while visiting a Government fruit plants nursery in Samba district, where he inspected the newly introduced Date Palm plants from Jhodpur (Rajasthan) and growing successfully in the nursery.
Later, he inaugurated a High Density Plantation in a compact area of 10 Hectares at Badori, Block Bari Brahmana, where he asked the farmers involved in the compact area to go far a community based tube well for the irrigation of the fruit plants and suggested to cover the area in phased manner.
Earlier, Farooq Khan interacted with the fruit growers at Government Fruit Plant Nursery, Vijaypur. The fruit growers apprised the Advisor about the benefits they are earning by shifting from traditional crops to the high value crops cash crops like Strawberry and Dragon fruits promoted by the Department of Horticulture.
The Advisor asked the farmers to go for cultivation of exotic and high price value fruits like Dragon fruit, Strawberry and Date Palms to increase their income.
Director Horticulture Jammu Ram Savak, Director Agriculture Jammu K K Sharma, Chairman Municipal Council Vijaypur Ganesh Sharma, Chief Floriculture Officer Kathua, Sushil, Angurana, Chief Horticulture Officer Samba Ashwani Kumar, Chief Agriculture Officer Samba Sanjay Verma and other officers of Horticulture and Agriculture departments were accompanying the Advisor.
