India expects greater US investment in power sector: Scindia

NEW DELHI, July 3:  Government expects more investments from the US in the power sector, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said.
Scindia is currently visiting the US with the objective of further enhancing India–US partnership in the power sector, an official statement said.
In his address at an event in Washington, Scindia said that the challenges in the context of generation, transmission, distribution and access to electricity is topmost on his priority.
He also enunciated recent initiatives taken to address these challenges and their impact on the framework of India-US cooperation in the sector.
The power minister said that the sector drives capital investment and resultant growth in the country.
India has added about 50,000 MW during 2007-2012, and is expected to add another 1,18,000 MW over the next five years, of which renewable capacity would be 30,000 MW.
He informed that strong steps have been taken in the past seven months to improve fuel availability – coal and natural gas – to the power sector. (PTI)
