JAMMU, Aug 23: Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has posted 1990 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Manoj Pal Singh as first ever Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Srinagar, the post which has been created recently.
Singh has previously worked in Jammu & Kashmir from 1994 to 1999 as Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Jammu holding charge of Srinagar from time to time. In his second stint, he worked as Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals),J&K from October 2018 and disposed off all pending appeals of more than 4 years including very complicated matters.
He has worked in Income Tax Department in various capacities in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Delhi and Gujarat and has vast experience in the fields of administration, investigation and judicial matters. He had conducted various searches in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal and unearthed huge unaccounted incomes.
He was also instrumental in implementation of Direct Tax Laws in Sikkim. During his tenure in Directorate of Legal & Research, he made significant contribution in reducing the in-fructuous litigation with the tax payers at the highest level— Supreme Court.
Singh had played very vital role in successful completion of Parliamentary election in 1996 when Income Tax Department dispatched large number of contingent from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh for elections in Srinagar and Baramulla constituencies amidst the shadow of militancy. He ensured that all the teams were safe in the remotest areas.
He has served in J&K for longest tenure of 8 years and is very familiar of the tax payers’ problems. While his emphasis would be to increase number of tax payers and revenue collection from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh by exploring untapped areas, it is also expected that in his tenure tax payers will get their rightful dues and old disputes will be amicably resolved.
