Sarpanch from Doongi arrested with heroin

RAJOURI, Aug 27: A Sarpanch from remote Doongi block near the Line of Control in district Rajouri was arrested along with a consignment of heroin by police during Naka in Sunderbani area last night.

Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Sheema Nabi Qasba while talking to media-persons at Nowshera disclosed that police developed an information that a consignment of narcotics from a village near the LoC in Doongi area was being smuggled to Jammu in a car.
Acting on the tip off, the police party from Sunderbani Police Station laid a naka on Jammu-Rajouri highway. During checking the team led by SHO Sunderbani intercepted a Tata Indigo car bearing Registration Number JK02B/ 2493.
During frisking of said vehicle, a consignment measuring 690 grams of heroin was recovered, which was seized.
The arrested person was identified as Ch Liyaquat Ali, son of Mohd Rasheed, a resident of Challas Panchayat in Doongi Block of district Rajouri. Later, it was discovered that the accused is Sarpanch of his village, falling in Doongi block.
A case FIR No. 79/2021 under sections 8/21/22 of NDPS Act has been registered in Sunderbani Police Station and further investigation is going on to unearth all the links connected with the arrested Sarpanch in smuggling of Narcotics.
“It was believed that the the consignment had arrived here from that side of the LoC and this network was operating in the area for the past several years. The recovered consignment was enough to prepare around 2800 doses, valuing lakhs of rupees in the market,” she added.
The police said that arrested Sarpanch has been placed under sustained interrogation. Some vital links are expected to be discovered shortly. It may lead to the arrest of some more persons connected with the network. Further investigation was in progress.
Additional SP Nowshera, Amit Verma, SDPO Nowshera Zakir Shaheen Mirza and other officers were also present during press conference.
