Regional films have to be rooted in the soil: Yashpal Sharma

JAMMU, July 5:    Jammu film directors and actors are very talented and no less that their counterparts in Bollywood, was the concerted view of well known theatre and film actor Yashpal Sharma.
Presently shooting in the winter capital for his role in forthcoming Dogri film “Geetiyaan’ being directed by Rahul Sharma, the Bollywood celebrity Yashpal Sharma who has won hearts of cinegoers of the country for memorable performances in Bollywood hits like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Gangajal’, ‘Singh Is King’, ‘Rowdy Rathor’ and many others films, was visibly excited to be in Jammu which for him is not only the City of Temples but also the city of theater.
Belonging to small town of Hissar in Haryana and a theatre actor trained from National School of Drama, Yashpal Sharma keeps the balance between his passion for theatre and films as he finds time to regularly perform stage plays in native town Hissar, Mumbai, Delhi and other big cities of the country.
Speaking during an interaction, organized by Sudhir Mahajan, founder director Samooh Theatre at K L Saigal Hall, here today, Yashpal Sharma shared his views about the future of regional films as well as theatre in peripheral centers like Jammu.
Addressing the audience which comprised of members of local drama fraternity, writes, poets and musicians, he said that the immense popularity of social media amongst the younger generation and availability of low cost cameras has opened a new opportunities for low budget films which can be uploaded on YouTube.
He said it is important that instead of aping Mumbai film industry which is spreading ‘meetha zaher’ through show of blatant violence and item songs like ‘Munni Jawan Hui’, to make socially relevant regional films in local languages like Dogri,  which are based on subjects and stories having roots in native culture and practices.
Speaking about future of theatre in centers lie Jammu, he said instead of looking for patronage from Government, it was vital to keep the fire and passion for theatre alive to stage meaningful plays and strive to create a culture where audience comes to see plays after buying a ticket.
The eminent persons who were also present in the presidium included eminent Dogri writer, poet and playwright N D Jamwal, Prof Lalit Magotra, President Dogri Sanstha, Padamshree Moti Lal Kemmu, Makhan Lal Saraf and Sahbir Mujahid, Director Jammu Doordarshan Kendra.
