JAMMU, Sept 7: The first Bilateral Cochlear Implant Surgery was performed on a 6-year-old child at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital, Jammu.
The patient was having bilateral severe to profound hearing loss since childhood. The surgical team was led by Dr Kapil Sikka, Professor, Department of ENT, AIIMS New Delhi (Pioneer in Cochlear Implant Surgery) and included Dr Parmod Kalsotra, Professor and Head, Department of ENT, GMC Jammu and Dr Padam Singh Jamwal, Professor, Department of ENT, GMC Jammu.
The anaesthesia team was led by Dr Smriti Gulati, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesia and included Dr Renu Wakhloo and Dr Isha. Nursing staff included Saima, Nisha and Sheetu. Other Operation theatre staff included Mathew, Sanjeev and Fazal.
The surgical team also included Vinay, Audiologist Department of ENT, who along with Nehashish Sahu (Senior Hear Life Specialist MEDEL), Ishwar Chandar Dey (from BioAide) and Miss Jagriti (from Medtronics), monitored the Neural Response Telemetry which showed good response during the surgical procedure.
The whole procedure was successfully completed and post-operative period was uneventful. The switch-on of the device was done today in presence of Principal GMC Jammu Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma and excellent behavioural responses were observed from the child.
Speaking on the occasion, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr Dara Singh said the Department of ENT will continue Cochlear Implant Programme under the mentorship of AIIMS, New Delhi.
