Transporters demand payment of election duty fares

Srinagar, Sept 13: Scores of drivers from South Kashmir today protested here, demanding the payment for the transporters whose vehicles were used by the authorities during District Development Council elections.
The transporters gathered at Press Enclave here under the banner of the South Kashmir Transport Association and raised slogans to support their demands. They claimed that the administration requisitioned over 400 maxi cabs during the DDC elections and that the authorities promised that payment would be made soon after the elections were completed, but that payment is yet to be made despite passaging nearly nine months.
“During the elections, the government hired around 400 vehicles, but payment is yet to be made. No one is paying attention to our problems. For the last three years, the drivers have been suffering because of lockdowns,” said Abid Ahmad, the association’s president.
The drivers said that they have raised the issue with various officials but that authorities have failed to resolve the issue. “We have knocked on every door, but nothing has happened so far. We have provided vehicles for elections in the past, but the government is treating us unfairly this time,” a driver said.
