Sarpanch shot at in Valley

Srinagar, June 2: Militants last night shot at and injured a Sarpanch in Keller area of South Kashmir district of Shopian while security forces recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition from Handwara in North Kashmir.
Police said that two militants barged into the house of Ishtiyaq Ahmad Paswal, 30, son of Ghulam Qadir resident of Shalidar Zrakan, near Vishroo in Keller and fired at him. He received multiple injuries in both legs and was shifted to District Hospital Shopian where from he was referred to Bones and Joint Hospital, Srinagar for further treatment.
Residents said that Paswal was facing militant threats for long and had shifted from his village Shalidar to Vishroo few months ago. He had also fought assembly election in 2008 from Shopian constituency.
In the meantime, police in North Kashmir district of Bandipora along with 3-Madras regiment of Army recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition in the forest area of Kinsar, Handawara last night.
Police said that on a specific information, security forces carried out search operation in Kinsar forest area Handwara and recovered three AK-47, 19 AK magazines-, 441 AK-47 rounds, , 44 rounds of 7.62mm, 5 9mm Pistol, 4 magazines of 9mm, 21 Pistol Rounds and 11 AK belt rounds.
Police said that they arrested two persons in connection with last month’s grenade attack on police station Sopore, in which three police men and six civilians were injured.
Police said that on May 19 at about 09:50 a.m., militants lobbed a hand grenade towards police station Sopore resulting in the injuries to 3 policemen and 6 civilians. A case (FIR No. 126/2012 U/S 7/27 A. Act, 04 prevention and suppression of sabotage Act (PSSA) was registered in police station Sopore and investigation was taken up.
Police said that during the course of investigation it surfaced that one HM militant Javid Ahmad Matoo alias Saqib resident Khushalmatoo, Sopore handed over a hand grenade to, Ishfaq Shafi Kana son of late Mohammad Shafi Kana resident of Jamia Qadeem, Sopore on May 18 at his house during evening.
Police said that Ishfaq Kana along with one more culprit, Saleem Mushtaq Beigh son of Mushtaq Ahmad Beigh resident of Sheikh Sahib, Sopore jointly lobbed the grenade which exploded near the main gate of police station Sopore, resulting large scale of injuries to policemen and civilians.
Police said that on the basis of eye witnesses report, the duo was identified and subsequently arrested. The militant Javid Ahmad Matoo alias Saqib was injured during an attack on police by militants on January 7 this year in which one civilian was killed and two policemen and 2 civilians were injured. His weapon was recovered from the scene of occurrence by police. Police said that a thorough manhunt has been launched to arrest the militant and prosecute him.
