SRINAGAR, July 10: Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Department has stopped sugar supply to ration depots on the eve of holy month of Ramadhan that begins from tomorrow while Director CAPD has said that people can buy it from market as they have high purchasing power.
“There will be limited sugar supplies in Government ration depots during the month of Ramadhan as we are facing sugar shortage due to procurement from open market which will take around two months from now,” Director CAPD Mir Mushtaq Ahmad told Excelsior.
Mir said that the department has formulated some temporary measures to distribute sugar to the people in the month of Ramadhan. “We have saved some stock of sugar that will be distributed at ration depots in this month, but the amount of sugar distributed to each family will be reduced; around 1-2 kilograms of sugar will be allotted to each family instead of 3.5 kilos per family,” he said.
Asked how people will manage with such a small quantity, the director said that people will purchase from the market as they have high purchasing power. “People spend lakhs on marriages and complain about shortage of sugar and other commodities from public distribution systems. They can manage to buy sugar from the market,” he said.
The department has floated tenders for procurement of 84,1 400 metric tonnes of sugar from open market on June 25 this year and its receipt date has been finalized till 25th of this month.
“The modalities have almost been finalised, we have invited tenders for bidding though different media, but it will take time,” Mushtaq said.
