HC asks IFC to remove encroachments along river banks

Srinagar, July 10:  High Court today directed the Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Department to take necessary action for removal of encroachments and obstructions along the river banks.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice DS Thakur while hearing the proceedings of a Public Interest Litigation titled Qazi Rashid Shams versus State directed the IFC authorities to take action and necessary steps for removal of obstructions and encroachments under Section 83 of the J and K Water Resources Regulation Act 2010.
The court also ordered that the report in this regard should be filed by next date of hearing.
In its earlier order, the court had asked Additional Advocate General M. A. Chashoo to submit its report after ascertaining thoroughly the alleged removal of encroachments along the river bed in accordance with the village map.
The PIL had sought direction from the court to ask the State to prevent pollution of river Sindh flowing from Gumri through various villages joining river Jehlum between Sumbal and Srinagar and to remove constructions which were being carried out illegally on river bank.
Advocate G.A Lone appeared for the petitioner while Advocate General M I Qadri appeared for the State.
