Awareness-cum-outreach program organised for transgenders

JAMMU, Oct 6: On the directions of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey, Executive Chairman J&K Legal Services Authority and under the guidance of Justice Tashi Rabstan, Chairman High Court Legal Services Committee, awareness cum outreach program was organised by Secretary High Court Legal Services Committee Amit Kumar Gupta for educating transgenders residing at Shaheedi Chowk here.
During the program, about 21 transgender residing in a building highlighted the problems faced by them and their children.
The problems, which were discussed include personal security, sanitation, people impersonating as transgender for gaining easy money and the said gangs are defaming the peaceful and law loving genuine transgender community, these gangs are even committing physical assaults on genuine transgender due to which they are in great fear, local schools not admitting their children in their schools due to which they’re not able to get quality education, police doesn’t register FIR in regard to murderous attacks on them by assailants, they’re ignorant of free legal services under DLSA, HCLSC or NLSA and they want to be a part of mainstream.
Responding to them, Advocate Rohit Verma and Advocate Nadia Qadeer Panel Lawyers High Court Legal Services Committee made the community aware of free legal services, the 2014 Supreme Court judgment that interprets the spirit of the constitutionally recognized socio-economic and educational rights inherently vested, apart from recognizing them as a minority community, inherently vested in the transgender community.
Moreover, directions issued to the State and Central Governments were also brought into their knowledge. They were also made aware of their right to free legal services at all levels.
