JAMMU, Oct 28: Kavinder Gupta, senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, sought adequate compensation for the farmers affected by an unprecedented hailstorm in the region which devastated their standing paddy crops.
The BJP leader appealed to the Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha and Union Agriculture, Minister to provide adequate compensation to farmers for damaged crops due to unseasonal heavy rains and hailstorm. He said that unseasonal heavy rains and hailstorms damaged major crops such as paddy, sugarcane, potato and peas last week dashing the hopes of farmers who were expecting bumper crops this season.
Kavinder Gupta urged the Government to extend appropriate help to the farming community in J&K as the scenario here is different from other states because farmers are totally dependent on the annual crop for their livelihood. He said that the Government should show a big heart in compensating the farmers of J&K as they are broken with this catastrophe since the standing crops were nearing harvesting time.
The senior BJP leader however lauded the BJP Government at the Centre for taking up so many farmer–friendly steps like annual payment of Rs 6000 under Prime Minister, Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. He said that this scheme was started by the Modi Government keeping in mind the small and marginal farmers of the country. “Under this scheme, the Government provides financial assistance of Rs 6,000 to the farmers in three installments in a year”, he added.
Kavinder Gupta said that the J&K administration should project the demand of farmers before the Centre and get the required relief for the natural calamity-stricken tiller community which is currently moving from pillar to post to get the much needed relief. He expressed confidence that LG’s administration will provide more than adequate help to the affected farmers segment and said that providing succor to those in need is the essence of Modi Government. He anticipated that no affected tiller will be left behind during the hour of need and the Government will provide every possible help to boost the morale of the farming community of the UT which is currently reeling under stress and strain due to vagaries of weather.-
