Srinagar, Oct 29: The family of a Kashmiri student from the Bandipora area of North Kashmir today protested here, seeking the release of their son, who was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra district for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s recent victory over India in the T20 world cup.
Showkat Ahmad Ganie’s relatives and family members gathered at Press Enclave here and demanded his release. They said that their son is a B-tech student at Raja Balwant Singh Engineering College in Agra and that they were able to send their ward to study outside with government assistance.
“We could not have afforded to send our son outside the Valley without the help of the government because we are poor. I am now pleading with the government to pardon and free him,” Hafeeza, Showkat’s mother, said.
Another family member pleaded with officials to let her son go if he made a mistake. “My child is my only hope, and I cannot see him behind bars,” she added, pleading Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to personally intervene and obtain her son’s immediate release on humanitarian grounds.
Patiently, three students from Agra’s Raja Balwant Singh Engineering College were arrested on Wednesday after allegedly shouting pro-Pakistan slogans and posting social media posts in favour of the neighbouring country following the match.
