JU organizes lecture on “Dialogics of self: The Mahabharta and Culture”

JAMMU, July 19: The Department of English, University of Jammu today organized a Lecture on the topic “Dialogics of self: The Mahabharta and Culture” by Professor Lakshami Bandlamudi.
Her visit to the University was a part of her extensive research work. The lecture exposes the inter relationships between individual and culture, historical dynamics in interpreting texts, using key concepts from Bakhtin’s theory of dialogics.
She described her book “Dialogics of self, the Mahabharta and Culture: The History of understanding and understading of History” as an interdisciplinary work on her area of research connecting cultural studies, myths, culture, history and consciousness. The main focus of her lecture was on two characters: ‘Karna’ and ‘Draupdi’.
Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, in his presidential address appreciated the contribution of Dr Lakshmi Bandlamudi in highlighting India’s rich culture and ethos and hoped that her work will inspire the scholars working in this field. He further said that exchange of ideas helps academic growth and proves beneficial for the scholars and student community in a big way.
Earlier, Prof Kulwant Kour, HoD English gave a brief introduction of the work of Dr Lakshmi Bandlamudi who is a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellow and a Professor of Psychology at LaGuardia Community College, City University of New York. She teaches courses in Human Development and women’s studies.
Among others present on occasion were Prof Deepshikha Kotwal, Prof Versha Mehta , Prof Arti Bakhsi, J K Sharma, Special Secretary to VC, Prof Sucheta Pathania, Dr Vinay Chouhan, Faculty members, staff, scholars and students.
