JAMMU, Nov 10: In the much publicized Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO ‘SAVE’ (Save Animal Value Environment) through its Chairperson Devinder Kaur Madaan alias Rumpy Madaan seeking closure of un-regulated and un-registered/un-licensed slaughter houses/meat shops in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, Division Bench of High Court comprising Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Mohan Lal has directed Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to file latest status report within three weeks.
When the PIL came-up for hearing, Division Bench, after hearing Advocate Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed for the PIL, observed, “the order dated 29.12.2020 records that the work of construction of two slaughter houses in Jammu would commence soon as tenders for the construction have been received by the competent authority and the work shall be allotted within no time”.
“Advocate Harshwardhan Gupta appearing for the Jammu Municipal Corporation submits that the work has already been allotted and it is in progress but there is nothing on record to show to whom the work has been allotted and what is the extent of the progress and when the proposed construction is likely to be completed”, the DB observed.
“Similarly, the order reflects that the work of construction of slaughter house in Srinagar is in progress and it would be completed within next 7/8 months. The period is already over but S S Nanda has not apprised the court as to the progress of the slaughter house”, the DB said and accordingly directed Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to file latest status report regarding the progress of the construction of the slaughterhouses in two cities.
