JAMMU, July 22: Gandhi Nagar police in a swift action cracked a blind murder case of a rag picker and arrested the accused within 24 hours.
A police spokesman said that on July 21, information was received that an unidentified male dead body with injury marks was lying near JDA Quarters.
On getting information, police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), he added.
A case under FIR number 176 under Section 302 RPC was registered at Gandhi Nagar police station and investigation started”, he said.
During investigation the deceased was identified as Bittu, who use to live in a makeshift accommodation near JDA Quarters in Nehru Market. Bittu had been living in Jammu for the past 20-25 years and was working as a labourer/rag picker.
During further investigation, it came to light that Bittu used to consume alcohol with Balwan Singh of Marjala, a rickshaw puller. During questioning, Balwan Singh broke down and confessed the crime, spokesman added.
Balwan Singh stated that he entered into a brawl with Bittu while they were drinking near JDA Quarters on the intervening night of July 20-21 and later the accused attacked Bittu with a knife, resulting in the latter’s death, he added.
The body of Bittu has been kept in the mortuary and efforts are afoot to identify his relatives so that his body could be handed over to them for last rites.
Police party led by SHO Rajinder Sharma made the arrest under the supervision of SP South Rajeshwar Singh and SSP Jammu Atul Goel.
