POONCH, Nov 15: Shamsher Hakla Poonchi, the prominent Gujjar leader and intellectual of J&K regretted that the Scheduled Tribe Status granted to Gujjars and Bakerwal community in J&K in the year 1991 has not been implemented in letter and spirit till date.
Addressing the members of his community on the celebration of first Tribal day on the name of Birsa Munda a prominent name among tribals in connection with celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahautsav, he regretted that Gujjars and Bakerwals who also belong to the Tribal community remain a neglected lot in J&K as successive Governments failed to give benefits to the community under the Act.
In an appeal to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi the Gujjar leader demanded that the community be given the benefits under the Scheduled Tribal status granted the community in 1991 so that they too can lead on the path of progress and development like other communities in the UT. He expressed the hope that Prime Minister who is totally concerned for the welfare of backward and neglected communities living in far flung areas of the country will ensure that the Gujjars and Bakerwals in J&K should not be deprived of their rights.
