JAMMU, Nov 17: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital in Kakryal, Katra has performed the first-ever Head and Neck Interstitial Brachytherapy of Jammu region for Tongue Cancer on an 85-year-old man and given him a new lease of life.
Shankar Dass was diagnosed with Tongue Cancer, for which he was treated 4 years back and was on regular follow-up. About 4 months back he presented with mass in the center of the tongue and was not able to take any solid food.
The patient was initially told that he requires surgery. But he decided to get a second opinion at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital. The patient consulted Dr Rajpal Singh Consultant Radiation Oncology. The patient was evaluated with a PET scan and CEMRI face and neck. After necessary investigations, diagnosis of cancer recurrence was established.
After thorough discussion in tumour board, it was decided to take the patient for brachytherapy as disease was localized (confined to tongue only) and advanced age of the patient.
Explaining the procedure, Dr Rajpal Singh said that the procedure they were planning was known as Interstitial Brachytherapy and it is one of the most localized and highly precise form of radiotherapy. Patient needs in patient admission and supportive care. To prevent any compromise in the quality of the procedure Dr Abhinav Choudhary (Surgical oncologist) was also involved in the treatment of the patient.
The patient responded well to the procedure and had a smooth recovery. On follow up patient is clinically disease-free and when evaluated after 3 months with CEMRI face and neck there was no impression of the disease. Now patient at the age of 85 can have food normally.
