SRINAGAR, Nov 23: Sarpanchs and Panchs from South Kashmir’s Shopian district protested here today against the concerned Block Development Officer, demanding that he be removed from the region immediately.
The Panchs and Sarpanches gathered at the Press Enclave here and raised slogans in favor of their demands. They alleged that when they approached the officer about concerns in their areas, he humiliated and insulted them inside his office.
“Yesterday, we went to the BDO at around 2 p.m., but the officer didn’t arrive until 2:30 pm. When one of the Sarpanchs approached the concerned official to discuss difficulties in their respective zones, the official abused him”, Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, a Sarpanch said.
The Sarpanch said that they fought elections under difficult circumstances and that they are being treated unfairly. “I asked him about an issue in Ward 9, but the official abused me unnecessarily,” one Sarpanch said, adding that they had high expectations after winning the election, but that official indifference has let them down.
The Sarpanch requested that the officer be promptly transferred failing which they would resign from their positions. “We request that the BDO be transferred within 24 hours or we will resign enmass,” a Sarpanch said.
