JAMMU, July 25: Mahila Wing of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that women in the State are feeling unsafe as the crime against them has considerably increased.
Addressing a press conference here today, district president of the Mahila Wing of the party for Jammu, Sushila Jamwal alleged that crime against women has increased considerably especially after 2010 in the State. She alleged that there is fear and frustration among the women and they are feeling insecure while moving in public transport even in the streets or roads, outside their houses. The school, college or tuition centre going girls are also disturbed over the growing situation. Even the working women are feeling unsafe at their respective work places.
While sharing some figures, the PDP leader alleged that nearly 9634 cases of rape, molestation, kidnapping/ abduction etc were reported in last three years in the State. These figures indicate the insensitivity on the part of State Government which apparently has lost its grip on the law enforcing agencies. She alleged that there was gang rape case in Rajouri on July 17. The rapists came into a Sumo vehicle and threw the minor victim at the hospital gate. It is unfortunate that Rajouri police has failed to work out the case and put the accused behind the bars. Even the cops failed to identify the vehicle.
Yet another similar attempt was made on a girl in Rajouri district two days back where girl raised alarm and the accused escaped after people started gathering there. The girl had gone to her tuition centre. The culprits are least bothered about the law enforcing agencies in view of corrupt system prevailing all over here. She alleged that officers sitting at the top have no time to take review or pull up the subordinates and there is lack of accountability at each step from top to bottom. Seniors do not take crime review and seem to be busy in their other `agendas’.
Despite enacting stringent laws, the incidents of rape have shown increasing trend, which is a cause of concern for every one in the society. The present Government has failed to safeguard the women and ensuring their safety. It has no right to rule as women constitute nearly 50 % of the voters. Others present on the occasion included Veena Sangra, Savita Pathania, Veena Manchanda, Indu Anand, Sandhya Mehta and Rekha.
