JAMMU, Dec 12: Movement for Justice for Refugees of 1947 (MJR47) today urged the Government and Delimitation Commission to consider reserving at least 10-12 Assembly seats to Displaced Persons (DPs) of 1947 from PoJK living in J&K and rest of India.
“We have always pleaded the newly expected pattern of representation for PoJK DPs who migrated from Indian Territory during attack in 1947 which is still recognized to be integral part of India. Non giving representation for the large community of more than 14 lakh Displaced Persons of 1947 from PoJK living in J&K as well as throughout India will be adopting inequality with this class of Indians who not only defended Indian territory by losing more than 40000 lives in 1947 and had faced great hardships for more than 70 years,” said J S Sudan, convener, MJR47 Jammu, in a handout issued today.
He said it seems that the Commission is considering giving floating seats to KP migrants on the pattern of Sikkim and Puduchery for Budhist Monks. This is the most welcome step of Government and this alone is the concept which we have been pursuing for Sikhs before Government as well as Delimitation Commission. He said they expects that similar gesture will be announced for Kashmir migrants Sikh as well as non migrant Sikhs living in the valley who are facing the brunt of militancy throughout since 1989 and keeping the flag and face of India alive in valley.
“MJR47 has made representations to the Government as well Delimitation Commission to either accord 8-10 seats on the analogy of the migrants KPs being considered or accord 24 seats which have always been wrongly deducted from total elected membership as is evident from interpretation of provisions of Re-Organization Act, 2019. This stand is apart from the 24 seats reserved and to be opened when area will be occupied. The Delimitation Commission through this medium is requested to properly reconsider our representations and it will understand that allocation of seats to PoJK DPs falls well within their preview with without touching the 24 freezed seats,” he added.
