NEW DELHI, Aug 3: Isolated areas of northern India today received light to moderate rainfall while dry conditions drove up day temperatures elsewhere in the region.
A cloudburst was reported in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh which washed away crops and destroyed houses while continuing showers in Uttar Pradesh meant that major rivers in the State continued to be in spate.
The sun beat down on Delhi on a hot and humid day in the national capital with residents complaining of stuffiness and sweating.
The maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 36.1 degrees Celsius, a rise of three degrees.
The minimum also rose by a notch to settle at 27.4 degrees while humidity in air fluctuated between 55 and 83 per cent.
In HP, pea and potato crops spread across 40 bighas of land were damaged along with three bridges and some houses in a cloudburst at Chilling village in Lahaul and Spiti district.
The exact loss due to the cloudburst, which occurred in the cold desert area of Kaza where rains are a rare phenomenon, is being assessed while affected people are being provided relief, officials said.
Moderate rainfall took place in scattered areas as monsoonal activity weakened in the State. Dharamsala was the wettest place in the state with 37.5mm rainfall.
Light to moderate rainfall occurred at isolated places of Uttar Pradesh where the Ganga and the Yamuna continued to be in spate in some parts of the State.
Central Water Commission sources said that the swollen Ganga had either crossed the red mark or was flowing close to it between Fatehgarh and Ballia.
Yamuna was flowing above the red mark at Hamirpur, Chilla Ghat (Banda) and Naini (Allahabad).
Rajasthan, too, experienced light to moderate rainfall which was widespread over the Udaipur division. A few parts of the Ajmer and Kota divisions also reported showers in the last 24 hours.
Jaipur, Barmer and Chittorgarh recorded 7.8mm, 4.2mm and 1mm rainfall, respectively, while Ajmer, Dabok and Jodhpur reported drizzles.
Meanwhile, maximum temperatures across Punjab and Haryana rose a few notches above normal today in the absence of any rainfall across the two neighbouring states.
The Union Territory of Chandigarh registered a high of 35.8 degrees Celsius, which was three notches above normal, local MeT office sources said.
In Punjab, Amritsar and Patiala saw the mercury settling at 35.6 and 35.1 degrees, respectively, a rise of two degrees for each.
Ambala in Haryana recorded a high of 35.6 degrees, up three degrees above normal, while Hisar settled at 34.5 degrees. The maximum in Bhiwani was at 35 degrees. (PTI)
