Srinagar, Feb 3: Following an acid attack on a girl in Srinagar, the district administration of Srinagar has finally woken up and has directed for the regulation of the sale of acid, corrosive substances while as a committee has also been constituted to survey the illegal sale of acid in the district which has also been tasked to submit its recommendations within 2 weeks.
In this regard, the Deputy Commissioner in an order reiterated—while making the mention of the Supreme Court directives on the sale of the acid—that over the counter, sale of acid is completely prohibited unless the seller maintains a log/register recording the sale of acid which will contain the details of the person(s) to whom acid(s) is/are sold and the quantity sold.
It said that all sellers shall sell acid only after the buyer has shown a photo ID issued by the Government which also has the address of the person, specifies the reason/purpose for procuring acid.
“All stocks of acid must be declared by the seller with the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) within 15 days; no acid shall be sold to any person who is below 18 years of age,” it said.
The order said that the educational institutions, research laboratories, hospitals, Government Departments and the departments of Public Sector Undertakings, who are required to keep and store acid, shall follow prescribed guidelines.
The Deputy Commissioner said that in view of the recent horrifying acid attack in Srinagar, immediate remedial measures are required to fix the responsibility.
“Accordingly, a surveillance Task Force to regulate the sale of acid/ corrosive substances in district Srinagar is hereby constituted…,” it said.
The team has been tasked to conduct a survey regarding unregulated/ unauthorized/ illegal sale of acid/ corrosive substances in light of order dated SC directives and has been directed to shall furnish its report within 2 weeks along with specific recommendations regarding action to be taken.
