World Cancer Day observed by various organizations across J&K

JAMMU, Feb 4: To mark World Cancer Day, Regional Cancer Center, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu conducted many activities. Staff of the Regional Center spent the day with cancer patients admitted in Oncology Ward. Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Head of Oncology Department, along with his team distributed blankets and food items among all cancer patients admitted in the Ward.
NSS Unit of Government College of Education, Jammu organized an informative webinar session ‘Cancer Talks’ online. The program was organized to spread awareness about the deadly disease and inform the students about the possible preventive measures that can be taken.
The event was successfully organized by Dr Shubhra Jamwal, NSS Programme Officer of GCOE along with Prof Shapia Shameem Bhatti, Prof Seema Kumari and Prof Sarita Dogra.
The program comprised of a guest lecture by the speaker of the day Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Professor and Head Regional Cancer Center, GMC, Jammu, who laid thrust on periodic screening and diagnosis of the diseases for timely treatment and observed that an effective awareness campaign needs to be launched.
He elaborated upon the various facets of this disease in detail and answered the queries of the students.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dr Kulvinder Kour said that there has been a consistent increase in the number of deaths due to cancer and it is necessary to hold such discussions to aware the youth. Dr Sushma Bala, Prof Satish Sharma, Prof Anuradha Choudhary and Prof Vinay Lata were also present at the webinar.
Avinash Cancer Care Charitable Trust (ACCT) Jammu commemorated the Day by organizing an online event. More than 50 people took part in the event held on virtual platform. Chairman ACCT Avinash Kour, who herself is a cancer survivor said that cancer is more likely to respond to treatment and can result in greater probability of survival if identified in early stage. Vice-chairman Manmeet Kour emphasized on the importance of knowing cancer rather than doing panic. On the occasion, Sehajpal Singh– a volunteer, gave a presentation highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment.
World Cancer Day was observed at GMC Kathua supported by LBN Radiations of Hope, a Cancer Care Foundation Trust. Going by this year’s theme of ‘Closing the Care Gap’, Nursing staff of Oncology Department at GMC Kathua organized Oncosensitization Program with a purpose to make the Nursing and Paramedical staff Oncosmart. Dr Anjali Nadir Bhat highlighted the preventive aspects of Cancer. She said that cancer is curable and there is no need to worry. Dr Deepak Abrol of Oncology Department in his virtual address asked the volunteers to take the message of Cancer awareness to the remotest areas.
The NSS Unit of Government Degree College, Udhampur organized an e-poster-making competition on World Cancer Day. Forty volunteers took part in the event. The first second and third positions were bagged by Yashika Khajuria of Semester 5, Kritika of Semester 5 and Pankaj Sharma of Semester 3, respectively. The two consolation prizes were given to Vanshika Gupta and Shivali Sharma of Semester 3.
To observe the Day, events like poster-making were organized by NCC Senior Wing Cadets of GGM Science College, Jammu on the theme “Close the Care Gap”, under the guidance of Principal Dr Ravender Tickoo. With the help of posters and speeches, the NCC SW cadets prayed for those needing care and compassion in these difficult circumstances. More than 22 cadets participated in the event.
NSS unit of GDC Kalakote, in collaboration with Red Cross unit organized an online slogan-writing competition to commemorate World’s Cancer Day under the guidance of the Principal Dr Romesh Kumar Gupta. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Romesh laid emphasis on various preventive measures of cancer including lifestyle modifications, healthy dietary habits etc.
The Science Club of GDC Khour organized an online poster-making competition on the topic “Lifestyle Vs Cancer” to spread awareness among the students regarding the increasing rate of cancer due to unhealthy lifestyles. A number of students presented their posters while some students gave concise presentation on cancer with special emphasis on lifestyle. The whole event was organized by Dr Tasleem, Prof Anju and Dr Sharesth under the guidance of College Principal Prof Tarsem Lal.
In order to create awareness in the students regarding Cancer disease, NSS units of GDC Kathua under the patronage of Incharge Principal Prof Raj Kiran Sharma organized an online poster-making competition on the theme “Close the Care Gap”. Volunteers prepared posters containing messages of awareness regarding Cancer. More than 50 volunteers participated in the competition.
On World Cancer Day, Red Ribbon Club of GDC Ramnagar organized a webinar and an inter-college drawing competition on the theme “Close the Care Gap”. An online lecture on “Cancer: A World-Wide Concern’ was delivered by Dr Rajani Sharma, Assistant Professor, Amity University, Jharkhand, Ranchi. An inter-college poster making competition was also organized in which 25 students from GDC Ramnagar and Amity University Jharkhand participated.
To commemorate the Day, NSS unit (Khidmat) of GDC Vijaypur organized an essay writing competition with the aim to reduce the misconception and myths about cancer and to help people in getting the right information at the right time. Students from various Institutions across J&K participated in the competition. The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr Sangeeta Sudan, Principal of the College.
In connection with World Cancer Day, Bhartiya Lok Sangeet Kala Sansthan presented a musical concert “Cancer Kola Bacho” in close coordination with Sangam Tru Art Production at Open Air Theatre, Durga Bhawan Janipur, Jammu. Specially prepared on the theme “Bacho Bacho Cancer Kola Bacho”, “Nasha Nai Kario Munde Kureio”, “Nai Pee Sharaban”, “Bari Kharab Chutki”, “Wajan Mata Nai Badyaoo Loko”, “Nahin Piyan Tobacco Balma”, nukkad, skits, songs and dances were presented to aware the masses.
