Over 200 people rescued from flash floods across Jammu

JAMMU, Aug 14: Government today said over 200 people were rescued today from flash floods who got trapped at different locations across Jammu region.

“More than 200 people, who got trapped in different parts of the regions due to sudden, flash floods have been rescued with the help of the Army, local police and teams of Indian Air Force,” Shantmanu, Divisional Commissioner Jammu told reporters here this evening.

Mr Shantmanu said rescue operations were launched in Rajouri, Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts and the trapped persons were rescued.

“Around 50 persons were alone rescued from Tawi river in Jammu out of which three were rescued with the help of IAF chopper,” said the Divisional Commissioner.

He said red alert has been sounded along the banks of Tawi river and Chenab river in Akhnoor area and people living close to the rivers are advised to vacate.

He further said the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which was closed due to the landslides in the morning, is open for traffic.

Deputy Commissioner Jammu Ajit Kumar Sahu said civil defence teams, SDRF teams have been put on alert and statutory warnings have been issued in wake of rising water level in Tawi and Chenab rivers.

He further said rescue teams are also operational in Akhnoor area where about ten people were trapped.

Meanwhile district Police, Samba said that in coordination with the Civil Administration, seven members of Gujjar community including four women were rescued.

The rescued persons, who were trapped in flash flood on an island shaped pasture on the river Basantar at Chak Dayala, Supwal were identified as Bawey, son of Allah Ditta, Maradu, son of Bawey, Shah Din, son of Mir Baaj, Kalsoom Bibi, daughter of Haji Mir Hussain, Rupi, wife of Sadiq Hussain, Amna, daughter of Nazir Ahmed and Reshma, wife of Saleem, all residents of Chak Dayala.
