HC directs Govt to stop use of polythene

SRINAGAR, Aug 14: High Court today directed the State Government to take decision within a set period of time to stop the use of polythene and polythene bags in the State.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir also directed the Government through Advocate General M I Qadri to submit the details of all the districts about the awareness programme to stop use of polythene in the State.
The Bench also issued show cause notice to all the Deputy Commissioners to explain why they have not submitted the reports about awareness programmes about polythene use.
The Government during the court proceedings submitted report about the action taken by it to curb polythene use and the quantity of illegal polythene seized in the State.
After hearing the AG’s arguments, the court asked the Government what steps have they taken to dispose the seized polythene, to which the AG replied that Pollution Control Board has been devising many ways to dispose off the seized polythene.
The Chief Justice retorted that all this is a lollipop being sold to the court.
The court also directed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation that no further dumping be allowed in Dal lake and to control the dumping of earth and earth filling in wet land in Dal lake.
The court asked the Director General of Police to assist the authorities in this regard.
