JAMMU, Aug 14: Panun Kashmir (PK) has criticized the State Government for imposing curfew and snatching the democratic rights of the peace loving people of Jammu.
In a letter to Union Home Secretary, Anil Goswami PK president Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo while showing his serious concern over the state of affairs in Jammu and situation created after the imposition of curfew in the aftermath of Kishtwar communal violence said that State administration has miserably failed to protect the minorities and instead have taken draconian measures to muzzle their voice and means of contact.
The letter said the latest in this series is Government’s decision to stop and ban the GPRS services, internet and issuance of instructions to the news channels not to show news about Jammu situation. It alleged that the common people have been put under house arrest by the Government and made prisoners in their own houses. The police, army and para military contingents are in streets and people want to know the reasons for these draconian measures, it added.
The letter said that this shows that the people have been divested of their right to protest in a democratic way as they are not able to move, talk to media and register their protest against the authoritarian measures of the Government. Terming it the murder of democracy, the letter said that it seems as if martial law has been imposed in Jammu on a day when people are supposed to make preparations for the celebration of the Independence Day.
The letter, while asking Union Home Secretary to take the urgent view of the State administration’s failure also sought the direct intervention of Union Government in the matter.
The copy of letter has also been submitted to National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
