Flood alert sounded in Jammu region, 4 more die, 50 rescued

JAMMU :The Government today sounded an alert as four more persons died in house collapse and flashfloods in Jammu region taking the toll to 14.
Fifty people were rescued by the army in Poonch border, raising the number of people rescued in Jammu region to 350.
Two women identified as Savitri Devi and Anju Devi, both residents of Latti village in Udhampur district, died when their house collapsed due to heavy rains, police said.
In Kathua district, one unidentified person was killed and another went missing when a house washed away in flashfloods in Shahpur area today while eight others were rescued, they said, adding that five houses were damaged in the incessant downpour in Machadi, Shahpur and Billawar.
A body was found in a wide drain in Gadigarh area of Jammu district, police said.
“Due to continuous rains, all majors rivers and nallahs of Kathua district are overflowing, so a flood alert has been sounded,” Deputy Commissioner, Kathua Jitendra Kumar Singh said today.
Similar alerts have been sounded in Jammu and Samba districts as well with authorities appealing people not to venture near rivers and nallahs due to heavy rains and flash floods.
Responding to calls from administration and local residents, the army rescued over 50 people trapped by flashfloods at Surankote, Poonch during an operation which lasted for more than seven hours. (AGENCIES)
