SRINAGAR, Aug 20:  High Court today directed the Government to implement all the decisions taken by it in the Chief Secretary-led meeting on the solid waste management in Achan dumping site in old Srinagar city.
A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice DS Thakur also directed the Government to file status report about the implementation of the decisions to the court by last week of this month.
Following the High Court order, the Government had convened a meeting of its top officials of SMC, ERA, PCB and other departments and taken several decisions to improve the disposal of solid waste at the site after the residents had filed a petition in the court.
The Government through its Advocate General M I Qadri submitted its report on the decisions taken in the meeting.
The Government informed the court to have taken several decisions including collection of garbage and efficient transportation by SMC, ERA to establish lechate treatment plant at the dumping site that will run round the clock to eradicate the foul smell, and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir will take fortnightly review meeting of the concerned departments to ensure strict adherence of Sewage Management Rules -2000.
The court during proceedings asked the Chief Executive Officer ERA to inform the court about the steps taken about lechate treatment at the site.
The CEO replied that that after his personal visit to the site, he saw that Lechate treatment plant is running for 6 hours a day.
But the counsel for petitioners Z A Qureshi pointed out that the report filed by Pollution Control Board has stated no Lechate treatment plant exists at the site on which the bench directed the Government to implement all the decisions taken by the Government in the meeting.
