SRINAGAR, Aug 22: Underlining the need for conducting workshops at district, block and tehsil levels to sensitize drivers about the driving rules and disastrous consequences of rash and negligent driving besides streamlining and easing the issuance of driving licenses, the Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Transport, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma emphasized upon the authorities of Transport Department to improve traffic regulations in order to contain road accidents.
Minister was reviewing the functioning of Transport Department at an officers meeting here today.
Secretary Transport, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, Transport Commissioner, Sanjiv Verma, Director State Motor Garages, G. A. Sofi, MD, State Road Transport Corporation, Tandan, Joint Transport Commissioner Transport, Sheikh Fayaz Ahmad were present on the occasion.
Secretary Transport gave detailed account of the working of the departments including State Road Transport Corporation, State Motor Garages and Regional Transport Office.
It was given out that several initiatives have already been taken to improve the working of the department and traffic regulations while ground work for setting up of two high tech driving Institutes at Jammu and Srinagar has been completed. It was informed that 100 kanals of land stands already identified at Jammu while in Srinagar the Deputy Commissioner has been asked to identify the land for the purpose.
The meeting was informed that Rs. 140 crore revenue generation has been targeted for current financial year while the RTO has earned Rs. 125 crore during previous fiscal.
MD, STRC was asked to improve workshop inventory and operation and make sure that vehicles coming for repairs are set right in minimum possible time.
Regarding manpower shortage at SRTC, State Motor Garages and RTO office, the Minister asked Secretary to take up the matter with SSRB and get all the vacancies, referred to them, filled in time bound manner.
Later, the Minister visited State Motor Garages, Bemina and took stock of the working of the department. He went round different mechanical units and asked the concerned to work with full dedication. Stressing for making the vehicles road worthy in shortest possible time, the Minister asked concerned heads of the units to keep in account the importance of the time and administrative needs.
The employees apprised the Minister about their difficulties and put forth certain demands pertaining to promotion, two and a half days salary, Uniform and provision of staff bus facilities for the employees.
The Minister assured them that all genuine demands would be looked into and asked Director to come up with recommendations in support of the demands of the employees so that matter is taken up with concerned Ministries.
