Rains delay replanting of saffron corm in Valley

SRINAGAR, Aug 23: The delay caused in the replanting of Saffron corms due to insistent rains in Saffron Valley of Pampore tehsil which was to start from August 15, the Agriculture Department has decided to start the mission of replanting the corms from September 1 now.
This was decided in a meeting of Agriculture Department with prospective saffron growers at Pampore 10 kilomters from here. The meeting was chaired by District Agriculture Officer, Extension Javed Iqbal and it among others was attended by Saffron Growers’ Association, Abdul Samad Bhat, Sarpanch Chandhara, Ghulam Rasool Ganai and Chooni Lal Bhat AEO, Agriculture, Pampore.
The meeting urged the growers to observe certain parameters which included applying of five quintals of FYM per kanal of land.
It said the fertilizers and fungicides will be issued to farmers free of cost by the department.
It said beneficiaries have to replant 2.50 quintals of corms per kanal of land. The weight of per corm should be above eight grams while corm to corm distance should be 10 cms and from row to row the distance should be 20 cms.
