NEW DELHI, Aug 24: Continuing its stronghold at the box office, the Shahrukh Khan Deepika Padukone-starrer ‘Chennai Express’ has now become the highest Bollywood grosser, beating the record of Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Three Idiots’, experts in the film trade said.
‘Chennai Express’ has earned a total of Rs 202.5 crore in two weeks since its release, overtaking the earnings of ‘Three Idiots’.
Film experts said ‘Chennai Express’ now holds a record of being the ‘Highest Grosser Of All Time’ at the Domestic Box Office.
Even in its third week, the movie continues to draw crowds, despite the release of ‘Once Upon a Time in India Dobara’ last week and ‘Madras Cafe’ yesterday.
The film has been setting new records at the box office since its release on August nine.
It earned Rs 167.10 crore (approximately) in its opening week, making it the highest Bollywood grosser in the opening week at the Domestic box office.
The flick was the highest Bollywood grosser in the opening week in the overseas market as well with Rs 72 crore at the Overseas Box Office.
The movie has also entered the list of top 10 Bollywood earners in the overseas markets.
It had earlier crossed Rs 100 crore mark in terms of its earnings in the opening weekend of its release.
The film’s collections at the theatres across India in the first three days of its release were Rs 100.35 crore, creating a record for the highest opening weekend collections for any Hindi movie.
‘Chennai Express’ has been the fastest film to reach the Rs 100 crore and Rs 200 crore mark.
It recorded the highest opening day collections at Rs 33.1 crore.
Produced jointly by UTV Motion Pictures and SRK’s Red Chillies, the film has had the widest ever worldwide release for a Bollywood movie.
While the flick was released in 3,500 screens across the country, it was released in over 700 screens in more than 50 countries.
Apart from the conventional markets of Britain and US, ‘Chennai Express’ was also released in Morocco, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Peru and Israel and that too on the same day and date.
Further, the movie has been dubbed in 10 different languages – English, French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Hebrew, Dutch, Turkish and Malay.
Besides, the film has been released with subtitles in several overseas markets.
