Shopian, Aug 24: Shopian police today busted a gang of extortionists who were posing as militants and arrested five persons in this connection. Police also recovered two toy guns, a toy pistol, Army trousers and masks from their possession.
Police said that acting on the frequent complaints of locals of Hirpora area about some armed men in camouflage uniform threatening and demanding money from them, police registered a case (FIR under number 43/2013 US 452, 392 RPC) Police Station Hirpora on August 7 and started investigations.
Station House Officer, Hirpora, Showkat Ahmad said: “During the course of investigation we called one of the suspects to police station repeatedly but he did not come. Since he had the long hairs and on being called he cut his hairs short which made us more suspicious.”
The SHO said that finally they took him into custody for questioning during which he admitted his involvement in the extortion and also revealed the names of his associates who were a part of the gang after which we arrested them all.
Police officer said, all of them confessed that they were indulging in extortion by posing militants using toy guns. He said that they also recovered 2 toy guns, one pistol, Army trousers, masks, one torch, a big knife and Rs 25000 cash which they had extorted from the people.
The arrested persons were identified as Gulzar Ahmad Chohan son of Shafi Chohan of Krichapathri , Shameem Ahmad Paswal son of Mir Hussain Paswal of Gorihalan , Sajad Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Mohd Mir of Keller Tariq Ahmad khan son of Mohammad Shafi Khan of Keller and Riyaz Ahmad Awan son of Ghulam Hassan of Pehlipora Keller.
