Stabbing incident leads to protest, road blockade

MENDHAR, Aug 24: The murderous attack on a local mechanic by some men near Dakki Bera in Mendhar led to a strong protest by family members, relatives and villagers from Darana today.
The victim has been identified as Mohd Sagir (40), a tractor mechanic hailing from Darana in Mendhar. He is now struggling for life in the GMC hospital Jammu. His wife who later rushed to rescue her husband was also attacked and left injured by the assailants led by a Sarpanch Zafar Iqbal.
The incident took place when Sagir was going to his shop on the main road near Mendhar. As he reached near Dakki Bera, some masked and a few unmasked men intercepted him and attacked with sharp edged weapons and lathis. They left him nearly half dead. A local religious person who arrived for his rescue was also allegedly abused by Sarpanch and some others. Victim’s wife Hazoor Begum also rushed there but she too, was beaten up severely. Later, when the people started arriving there, the accused fled.
Both husband and wife were removed to hospital by people. Sagir had stab wounds and multiple fractures on body. The doctors provided first aid and then referred him to GMC Jammu. The wife was still in Mendhar hospital.
The relatives of the victims and the villagers from Darana later blocked Mendhar-KG-Poonch road for over two and half hours. They raised slogans against police. They demanded arrest of the Sarpanch-Zafar Iqbal, a Pharmacist Mohd Shabir and others involved in the attack. They alleged that police refused to register an FIR.
Later, SDM and a police officer reached the spot and assured action under law against the accused persons. Then they lifted dharna at around 3.30 pm. The police registered an FIR No. 120/13 against Sarpanch, Pharmacist and 13 other persons in this regard, however, no one was arrested till late this evening.
