Srinagar, Apr 9: The residents of the Tantraypora area of Palhallan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district today staged a protest against the failure of the concerned department in ensuring drinking water supply to the area.
Scores of women came out on road to register their protest and ended up blocking the Srinagar-Baramulla Highway near Palhallan and accused the concerned department of putting them up to face the hardships despite Ramadhan.
“We are without water for the last 8 months but now the same has gone worse; we are forced to walk distance to get the water and despite being Ramadhan, we are left with no option but to come out and walk distance to get drinking water,” the protesting women said.
They said that there are some nearby areas that have the perfect water supply. “But there are those areas too which do not have the necessary water supply. We are suffering,” they said.
As the protestors blocked the road to press for their demands, the concerned Tehsildar Pattan Saqib Murtaza, along with DO Athar Pervaiz as well as SHO Pattan Nisar Ahmad Bhat reached the spot to pacify the protestors.
Tehsildar Pattan said that the issue pertains to the water distribution and that the area on the tail-end due to which the residents are facing water shortage.
“The people are resorting to violations by wasting the water and are using the drinking water for irrigation. We will ensure that the matter is resolved without any delay. Those with water motors will be fined and the same will be seized,” he said.
Meanwhile, after the assurances of the police and officers from the administration, the protestors dispersed peacefully and the traffic was restored on the National Highway.
