JAMMU, Apr 11: Birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was today celebrated by Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort here.
Speaking on the occasion Sham Lal Basson, general secretary of Sabha said that Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was a great social reformer, thinker, educationist and poet who pioneered in education to downtrodden and women.
“Mahatma Jyotirao Phule with help of his wife Savitri Bai Phule opened first school at Budhwar Peth in Pune on January 1, 1848 and Savitri Bai became first lady teacher of this country,” he said.
Prof. Chaman Lal Shivgotra threw light on the life and struggle of Phule couple.
F.C Satia gave a detailed view of Book Ghulamgiri and other important works done by the couple.
Prof. Kali Dass presented a whole life sketch of great struggle of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule.
B.D Thapa, a renowned singer sang many songs on life of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Baba Saheb.
Meanwhile, Arush Kalsotra, Coordinator NSYF J&K said that Mahatma Jyotirao Phule opened gates of education for underprivileged classes and girls in India. Paying tributes to Phule, R.K Kalsotra, State president All India Confederation of SC/ST/OBC Organisations highlighted Phule’s books for eradication of slavery and untouchability form the society.
“He was great visionary and was accordingly recognized by Dr. Ambedkar as one of his teachers,” Kalsotra maintained.
Confederation also distributed books of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule to the students.
