Female foeticide

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Manohar appeals civil society to contribute in checking female foeticide’, DE Aug 26.
In view of the falling sex ratio in the country, and particulary in our State, it is time to take firm steps to put an end to this ugly practice which has brought a bad name to the country.
It is quite disturbing that more than illiterate people, it is educated people who indulge in female foeticide. The discrimination meted out to girl child is not only an inhuman gesture but going against the tenets of religion one professes. Every religion has accorded a special position to women folk. They are to be respected and given a higher position in social hierrachy.
So more than Government, it is people themselves who have to ensure that the sex ratio be maintained in the interest of proper functioning of society. Any disequillibrium may have serious ramification for society. Social scients, religious preachers and reformers should come forward to educate society about the ill-effects of declining sex ratio.
Yours etc….
