Srinagar, Aug 27: Despite no authority from Government to the touts of different Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) and some social activists are looting students for facilitating Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS).
Jammu and Kashmir Coaching Centres Association (JKCCA) President, G N Var said that some NGO’s and so called “social activists” who claim to be the facilitators of PMSSS charge anywhere between Rs 25,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh to every aspiring student wishing to get funding from PMSSS.
“These touts even registered students online on their own in those colleges where these touts get a hefty commission ranging between Rs 50,000 to one lakh. This way they duped some 14000 students (5000 in 2012 and 9000 in 2013) by getting around Rs 100 crore,” he said adding that these touts flouted all the guidelines set by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD).
Putting the figures before media, Var said that the scheme funds 5000 students per year (250 scholarships each for medical and engineering seats, 4500 for general courses) but this year around 3000 students have been enrolled in engineering and more than 1000 for medical seats, which is against the rules of MHRD and the students are bound to face problems when funds will be disbursed.
“Last year, 5000 students were enrolled in some shady collages. The guidelines were flouted which resulted in 2000 students leaving the colleges midway,” he said.
