Polluted ‘Devika’ needs treatment

Untreated sewage water continuing to find its convenient way into the waters of the Holy Devika River, Purmandal has caused Pollution Control Committee to seek from the concerned authority the steps being taken to bring about improvement in the quality of the River. It has been found that both the odour and the colour of the water of the “sister of Holy Ganga Ji” speak loud about the River continuing to be polluted due to untreated sewage and other Nullahs , the water of which is muddying its waters.
The river otherwise is identified to be ”treated” under a project which could be compared with the massive Namami Ganga Project which fundamentally is slated to address the issues polluting this River. The sole responsibility resting with Mansar Surinsar Development Authority (MSDA) not only about the river specific issues but about the entire area , has reportedly been sounded many a time by the Pollution Control Committee about the need of addressing the core issue of the quality of the water of this river which as of now is of Grade B and other parameters of water not up to the set standards , needs to be looked into very effectively. Even citizens have been lodging complaints about the condition of the river with the authorities concerned which, therefore, becomes the responsibility of the MSDA to speed up the efforts being taken in this regard.
Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in the area are a must so that untreated water does not flow into this river. In fact, most of the problems related to pollution of our rivers is due to absence of reasonable number of STPs around or if there is one , that does not work properly. Should the colour of this Holy River at various places look yellow and leave foul smell around , is a serious question both for the authorities concerned and the people violating this river in many ways including causing encroachments and dumping garbage etc into it.
