JAMMU, Apr 29: The first of its kind surgery of two heart valves, was performed on a 24-years old female patient in the Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery at SSH, GMC, Jammu by minimal access approach through a small incision in the crease below right breast and opening the chest in between ribs without causing any chest instability.
This technique causes less bleeding and less need of blood transfusion, besides less pain and is cosmetically superior as the incision scar hides in breast crease.
Procedure of Mitral valve replacement and repair of Tricuspid Valve using Annuloplasty ring, through anterior Thoracotomy using conventional operative equipment and set of instruments, was first of its kind carried out in Govt Medical College, Jammu.
The patient used to become breathless and had palpitations for last three years and her heart beats were irregular as her one heart valve was markedly narrowed and other one was severely leaking.
Second patient, 50 year-old female operated by this technique had suffered brain stroke in September 2021 with paralysis of left side of body due to breaking away of part of clot from left heart chamber. In this patient, besides replacing Mitral valve and repairing Tricuspid Valve, large clot was also removed from left Atrium.
The Ayushman Bharat Scheme covered the expenses for the equipment and drugs used during surgery and postoperative period.
The surgical team comprised of Dr Shyam Singh (Surgeon) with Dr IA Mir (Co-Surgeon), assisted by Dr Mohit (Consultant), Dr Anita (Registrar), Dr Rashiv (Registrar) and Dr Yasin. Dr Arvind Kohli, Dr Vivek Gandotra, Dr Javed and Dr Rouf also helped in the procedure.
Cardiac anaesthesia was conducted by Professor and Head Dr Puja Vimesh, Dr Rasmeet Kour, Dr Vikas Gupta and Avinash Kour.
Principal, Medical College Jammu Professor, Dr Shashi Sudhan lauded the effort and stressed that the people should utilise these facilities of Open Heart Surgeries at their doorsteps free of cost to patients under Ayushman Bharat Scheme, which are being performed regularly at Government Super Specialty Hospital Jammu.
