Self styled religious preacher among 8 arrested, large quantity of intoxicants recovered

JAMMU, Aug 31: A self-styled religious preacher was among eight persons were arrested along with large quantity of intoxicants from Majin, Sidhra, falling under the jurisdiction of Nagrota Police Station.
A police spokesman said that, on specific inputs about drug racket operating from Majin, Sidhra, police party from Nagrota Police Station led by SHO Parvez Sajjad accompanied by Naib Tehsildar Jammu Khas raided the residential premises of self-styled godman Massom Ali Betaab, son of Abdullah of Majin, Sidhra.
During search, police recovered intoxicants including 188 injections, 56 syrup bottles and 30 capsules, he informed.
The self styled religious preacher was arrested, he said, adding that seven more persons identified as Mohammed Alam, Mohammed Abbas and Munir Hussain, all sons Masoom Ali, Naseeb Ali, son of Mohammed Hussain of Bajalta, Zulfikar Ali, son of Jalal Din of Janipur, Saudagar Ali, son of Asgar Ali of Bhaderwah and Anush Sharma, son of Bishan Sharma of Narwal were also taken into custody from the spot.
A case under FIR number 275/13 under Section 8/21/22 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Nagrota to determine the source of the seized materials.
He said that Masoom Ali as a self styled religious preacher use to distribute talismans (taaveez) for allegedly solving peoples’ day to day problems, adding that using this as a front, Masoom Ali used to justify the traffic of drug users, who visit his house regularly and in abundant numbers.
During the raid, police party was attacked and obstructed in the performance of their legal duty by other persons of the household and a separate case under FIR number 276/13 under Section 353, 366, 147 RPC has been registered in this regard.
