Workshop on ‘Fake News and Fact Check’ organised

JAMMU, May 18: Press Information Bureau (PIB), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India Jammu today organised an online workshop on ‘Fake News and Fact Check’ by involving various experts from media, Government and academics, here today.
The workshop was organised for the officials of various media units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting including PIB Jammu, Regional Outreach Bureau (J&K), Doordarshan Kendra Jammu and All India Radio Jammu with an aim to make the Government officials aware of the potential damage caused by fake news and its causes and identification of fake news.
Neha Jalali, Joint Director, PIB Jammu while welcoming the participants said that this workshop is important from many aspects especially when fake news is growing in today’s world and is constantly being written, permeating through broadcasts, internet sites and social media. She said that the need of the hour is to educate the end-users through workshops so that they may be informed of the various identification and verification tools to ascertain the accuracy of the news.
Tarun Upadhyay, senior journalist in his address on “Fake News & Journalism Ethics” said that the fake news undermines truth and has a potential for harmful consequences for democracy. He said that fake news or misinformation has prevailed in all eras but today technology has amplified the impact of fake news as due to social media misinformation spreads at an extremely fast pace.
Senior Assistant Professor, Central University of Jammu, Archana Kumari spoke on ‘Techniques for Fact Checking of Fake News’ and threw light on the causes of generation of fake news. She also talked in detail about the various motives and types of fake news like satire/parody, disinformation, imposter and manipulated content, misleading headlines etc.
In the technical session, Prof Archana Kumari made the officials aware of various online tools available to fact check the fake news.
The workshop was also attended by Deputy Director and News Head AIR/DD Ramesh Raina, Programme Head Doordarshan Jammu Gautam Verma, Programme Head, AIR Jammu, Rainu Raina, FPO Udhampur, Khursheed Yousuf, FPO Anantnag and many others.
