JAMMU, June 23: Aam Aadmi Party leaders and activists who were sitting on hunger strike near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh at Tawi bridge in Jammu against the ‘Agneepath Scheme’ were taken into custody by the police.
The Party leaders termed this coercive action of the police and JKUT Administration as an attack on democracy and violation of the right to conduct peaceful demonstration.
Dozens of AAP activists, led by party senior leader, Amit Kapoor, gathered near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh at main Tawi bridge and sat on a hunger strike in protest against the Agneepath scheme for recruitment in Defence forces.
A strong contingent of police along with buses reached the spot and took all the protesters into custody and shifted them to District Police Lines, Gulshan Ground, Gandhinagar.
Kapoor alleged that BJP Government wants to bring dictatorship instead of democracy in the country. By implementing Agneepath Scheme, the BJP Government without applying much mind and having done much exercise through debates, made the crores of youth of this country to come out on the roads.
These youth have been forced to think that the government has put their future and the security of the country at stake. Now, when the youth are protesting, cases are being registered against them. Even leaders of political parties protesting peacefully are being mal-treated.
Kapoor said that there is an atmosphere of anger across the country against the Agneepath scheme. The purpose of the government behind this scheme is to weaken the defence mechanism. If the government wants to reduce the expenditure, then first of all the allowances and pension given to the ministers and legislators should be abolished. After that, programs of Prime Minister Modi and his Ministers, which are done on government expenditure, should be banned.
Prominent among those detained by police included- Aslam Kohli, Harnek Singh, Rampal Khajuria, Shankar Singh Chib, Surendra Singh, Parvinder Singh, Hemraj, Kirti Bagotra and others.
