REASI, June 27: People of Panasa village today staged a strong protest and blocked the main road for about 2 hours after a 5-year-old boy died of drowning in a 10-feet deep pit filled with water in Anji Nallah.
The deceased boy was identified as Balvinder Singh son of Sukhdev Singh, resident of Panasa. As the news of the drowning of the boy spread, the villagers along with family members of the deceased assembled main Reasi road and staged a strong protest. They alleged that the boy drowned due to illegal mining in the Nallah as a result of which many deep pits have formed and they all are filled with water.
The agitated villagers demanded strong action against the mining contractors and registration of FIR against them. Getting information of the protest, senior officers of the Police Department and Tehsildar Reasi Munshi Ram reached the spot and assured the protesting villagers of a fair probe and strong action against the mining contractors following which the protesters dispersed and the road was opened for vehicular traffic.
Meanwhile, a case in this connection was registered by the concerned police and further investigation started.
